Since its early days, the Sentinel-1 (S1) Mission has been delivering sea state measurements to both operational and science users.S1 Level-2 Ocean (L2 OCN) operational products currently include Ocean Wind field (L2 OWI), Ocean Swell (L2 OSW) and Surface RadialVelocity (RVL). The latter remains not qualified due to limitations of the system and operational algorithms in production today. In the meantime, various ocean science studies have demonstrated that an improved RVL retrieval can be achieved, in particular if considering a SAR processing flow tailored to ocean products. Moreover, different studies have also pointed into directions to obtain valuable wave spectrum information from TOPS mode, which would improve the OSW coverage currently limited to wave mode (WV) products. Finally, it has also been shown that S1 can greatly contribute to the monitoring of high wind speeds, albeit with a tailored inversion and product format not consistent with current the L2 OWI chain. This study should bring together latest algorithmic developments into a dedicated and harmonized S1 Processor for Ocean Products (S1 POP). The S1 POP is intended to be the new framework for algorithm development and prototyping and should provide the community access to qualified L2 ocean algorithms to be used in-house and eventually on-demand platforms.
