The assignment concerns a direct replacement of an existing EDS detector within an already operational and validated SEM EBSD system, in which combined EDS EBSD analyses are essential for the research activities. The functional requirements are therefore strictly determined by the currently installed system. The current EBSD system consists of a BRUKER e flash system, currently operated via the ESPRIT software platform. It is necessary that the new EDS detector is fully compatible with the existing system without any additional interfaces or software, in order to ensure data consistency and operational efficiency, and to avoid an increased risk of error introduction. Alternative solutions would lead to disproportionate technical complications, additional costs, and operational inefficiency. The new EDS detector must meet the following specifications: • Its performance must at least match, and preferably exceed, that of the detector being replaced (X flash 610). • It must be equipped with a motorized retractable detector mechanism to ensure protection when analyzing (highly) radioactive samples. • It must be compatible with the JEOL JSM7100F SEM, including correct geometry for simultaneous integration with the existing EBSD detector. • It must be equipped with Peltier cooling to avoid the need for liquid nitrogen or other cooling media. A cost reduction in the form of a trade in of the defective EDS detector (XFlash 410, serial number 1259) is considered an important asset. Given the above mentioned requirements regarding interoperability, integration, and continuity, it is established that only one supplier is capable of meeting all technical and functional requirements, namely Bruker Nano GmbH. This supplier is the only party able to provide an EDS detector that is both hardware and software compatible with the existing SEM EBSD system, without the need for additional interfaces or modifications.
